Paradise at Parkridge Prom 2017
By Ronda Rousch, Activity Director
This year, during the Iowa State Fair, we decided to try something entirely new and opted to put on Paradise at Parkridge Prom 2017. It took months of planning.
The first task to tackle was finding 80-90 dresses for the ladies to wear. first started to think about it, I knew it was going to be difficult process, but I knew it was going to be worth doing. Using Facebook, additional help from my daughter in Minnesota and family and friends we were able to collect about 20 dresses. Not nearly enough! But word continued to spread and our request was heard. I was in shock when I received a text from a boutique owner who heard about what we were trying to do. She offered us 80 dresses in all sizes and colors. I picked them up soon after and then we were ready to really get things going!
We held a "shopping" day which allowed each resident to come pick out a dress and make sure they were getting the right sizes. Everyone who wanted to come to the prom found their perfect dress.
On the morning of August 17, volunteers, family members and friends came to help with manicures, make up, and fixing the ladies' hair. Other family members made flowers for all the men to wear. Everyone looked very sharp!
Meanwhile, the dining room was being decorated and the maintenance crew put up special lighting effects. Our cooks and aides made a special lunch and dinner for the occasion. Entertainment was provided by John Shoemacher and then, the moment everyone was waiting for ... the announcement of Prom King and Queen went to Steve Curtis and Frances Wyatt.
In the 30 some years I have been an Activity Director this is the first Prom we held. It was so special, and the memories will last a long time! Of course, we're looking forward to Prom 2018.
