Ridgewood Specialty Care in Ottumwa received a rating of 4 out 5 in the U.S. News & World Report 2017-18 Nursing Home Finder report released last month. The report uses existing federal nursing home rating information and federally reported health care data to come up with their own rating system. Criteria such as annual state survey results, medical quality measures, staffing levels and rehabilitation outcomes are all formulated to reach the rating. Des Moines Hospice staff go on dementia 'tour'

On Oct. 31, the Des Moines staff held a retreat which included a "tour" through dementia. One group put on glasses that mimicked cataracts or macular degeneration, sensory plates in their shoes, earphones generating extra sound and gloves to imitate tactile function loss. The other group were caretakers. Together they were asked to perform a variety of tasks to demonstrate the challenges of living with dementia. At the end of the day, they also took some time to focus on self-care for the caretakers.
